SNSD and Kara's Popularity is Soaring High in Japan

Korean female idols Girls' Generation scored the No. 2 spot on Japan's prestigious Oricon chart with their latest song "Hoot".

Girls' Generation [SM Entertainment]

"Hoot", whose license was sold to Japan, came in second selling 21,271 copies sold on the day of its release after Japanese songstress Ayumi Hamasaki, according to Oricon's daily music chart as of December 22, 2010.

Composed of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Sunny, Jessica, Seohyun, Yoona, Yuri (Kwon Yoo-ri) and Sooyoung, Girls' Generation made their debut in 2007 with first album "Into the New World". They have since released several albums which include their hit songs "Gee", "Genie" and "Run Devil Run".

The girls have led a successful year so far, being named the winner of the grand prize once again at Korea's Golden Disk Award, taking the title as best artist of the year for the second consecutive time at the 2010 MelOn Music Award and seeing their hit song "Oh!" named song of the year at KBS' televised music show "Music Bank".

They have also taken the Japanese music market by storm since making their official debut in the country in August last year, becoming the first Korean girl group to place in at No. 1 on the prestigious Oricon chart as well as having sold 100,000 copies of their Japanese singles "Gee" and "Genie" to be certified gold discs. In January, SNSD even won the New Artist of the Year award @ Japan Gold Disc Award 2011.

Kara and Girls' Generation also performed on Asahi TV's "Music Station" on Christmas Eve, making it the first time for both groups to take the stage on the same show since making their debuts in Japan.

Last year December, the prestigious Oricon chart reported that Kara and Girls' Generation were named the most successful new artists in Japan this year, coming in at No. 1 and 2, respectively.

Oricon's survey based on sales data from 39,580 music stores throughout Japan revealed that Kara earned a total 1.3 billion yen, approximately 18 billion won, with two singles, five albums and one DVD, while Girls' Generation raked in 880 million yen, about 12 billion won, with two singles, six albums and one DVD.

Individually, Kara achieved a number of feats including being selected best new artist of the year on top Japanese mobile music chart RecoChoku and their albums reaching up to No. 2 on Oricon's weekly chart.

Girls' Generation has also seen a successful singing career in the country becoming the first Korean girl group to place in at No. 1 on the prestigious Oricon chart and having sold over 100,000 copies of their Japanese singles "Gee" and "Genie" to be certified gold discs.

Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, CN Blue, F.T. Island and Supreme Team kept things simple and safe with black mini dresses and black suits. Loving SHINee and Yoo Ah Yin’s outfit with different shades of grey and lots of layerings for this winter season. For the ladies, Secret’s bridesmaid-like dresses on the red carpet really did not work for me; Min Hyorin’s simple bustier cocktail dress with nude heels really stood out in my opinion.

Girls' Generation takes third win on music show "The Music Trend" aka "Inkigayo""

Korean female idols Girls' Generation (SNSD) were crowned winners on a televised music program over the weekend, placing at the No. 1 spot once again with their latest song "Hoot".

The nine-member girl group received their third consecutive Mutizen Award on SBS' Sunday music show "Inkigayo" with "Hoot". "We really want to say thanks to our fans for always supporting us and we wish Tiffany a fast recovery so that she can take the stage with us", the members said in their acceptance speech. Composed of other members Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Sunny, Jessica, Seohyun, Yoona, Yuri (Kwon Yoo-ri) and Sooyoung, Girls' Generation have been topping numerous online and offline music charts with their new hit "Hoot" from their third mini-album of the same name. Meanwhile, KBS' Friday music program "Music Bank" did not air due to the country being in a state of grievance after North Korea fired over scores of artillery shells at a South Korean island near the border in the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, killing two soldiers and two civilians and injuring dozens of others.

Background Information:

The Music Trend (Korean: SBS 인기가요) (previously Popular Song, romanized asInkigayo) is a South Korean music program broadcast by SBS. It airs live every Sunday at 3:50PM KST. The show features some of the latest and most popular artists who perform on stage. It is currently hosted by Jo Kwon of 2AM, Jung Yong-hwa of C.N.Blue, and Sulli of f(x).

The Music Trend debuted as SBS Popular Song in 1991 as a chart show, but was canceled in Autumn 1993. It was later revived in 1998 with its original title and format. In 2003, the chart format was removed and was replaced by Take 7, where 7 of the most popular artists from the week are featured and the most popular artist receives the award for Mutizen Song.

In Spring 2007, the program changed from a recorded broadcast to a live broadcast in an effort to boost ratings, as well as changing the English name to "The Music Trend". On November 2, 2008, the program moved from 3:20PM to 4:10PM Sunday afternoons, airing before Good Sunday, also to boost ratings. In Spring 2010, the program expanded to 70 minutes beginning at 3:50PM every Sunday.

Idols Choose Inkigayo Over The 2010 MAMA

The November 28th broadcast of SBS’s Inkigayo had a stellar line-up with S.M The Ballad’s debut as well as performances from Girls Generation, KARA, BEAST, 2AM, Orange Caramel, Supreme Team, Co-Ed, F.Cuz, Oh Won Bin, NS Yoonji, U-Kiss, Gavy NJ, and many more!

Girls Generation won this week’s Inkigayo and teasers for T-ara and SISTAR’s comebacks were released during the broadcast as well.

Many netizens pointed out the Inkigayo line-up was far more appealing than the line-up for the 2010 MAMAs.

Netizens are now wondering why Korea’s artists held a massive boycott of the MAMAs.

Avex promises full-fleged support of SM Entertainment artists

SM artists Super Junior (top) and f(x) (bottom) [SM Entertainment]

Top Japanese talenthouse Avex has promised its full-fledged support of the careers of Korean agency SM Entertainment's artists.

The announcement was made on Avex's official website today, stating that they will continue to back the singing careers of SM's artists such as BoA, J-Min "and TVXQ who will resume their activities as a two-man band formed of members U-Know and Max"

The two firms have supported each other's artists for years now but their relationship had been in question after Avex signed with JYJ, former TVXQ members Jaejung (Hero), Micky Yoochun and Junsu, when the three halted their activities with TVXQ by asking their contract to be nullified with SM.

A few months later, Avex abruptly suspended its relation with the three on reports that the chief of the boys' Korean management agency C-JeS was related to a criminal organization while affirming Avex will continue to represent TVXQ, although the future of the band was up in the air.

Then just two days ago, SM announced that TVXQ would make a comeback next January as a duo with the band's remaining members U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin.

In today's press release, Avex also said they have signed exclusive contracts with SM's 13-member boy band Super Junior and girl group f(x).

Founded by former singer Lee Soo-man in 1995, SM Entertainment is one of the most influential entertainment agencies in the country alongside YG and JYP Entertainment.

They are well-known for managing the successful singing careers of H.O.T and S.E.S and some of the biggest names in the K-pop market including Girls' Generation, Kang Ta, SHINee and TRAX.

Big Bang, Kara and SNSD Not in Japan’s Biggest Music Festival, NHK 61st Kouhaku Uta Gassen

The Japanese media continuously delivered the news that star Korean groups Big Bang and Kara would appear on NHK’s 61st White vs. Red Fest. Sports-Nippon reported the news on November 21 with a caption saying, “Big Bang and Kara to Have Hallyu Competition in the White vs. Red Fest,” and it delivered the news that Big Bang had already decided to appear in the festival, and that Kara was finalizing conditions for appearing on the program.

Big Bang and SNSD Won Awards for 52nd Japan Record Awards!

Japan Record Awards is a major music awards show held annually for outstanding achievements. It is presented by the Japan Composer's Association. This year will mark the 52nd awards show. Big Bang and Girls' Generation both made it on the list of winners of awards alongside Japanese artists. Along with ICONIQ, they are the only Korean artists that have made it onto the list.

On November 20th, the ‘52nd Japan Record Awards’ announced their list of nominees and award winners. It’s odd to see that the winners for most of the categories have been selected already, but maybe that’s just for brevity’s sake.

The winners from the ‘Best Song‘ and ‘New Artist’ categories will progress respectively to compete for the ‘Japan Record Award’ and ‘Best New Artist‘ awards. The panel will select their choice in who should be awarded the ‘Japan Record Award‘ from the ‘Best Song’ pool, while the winner for the ‘Best New Artist‘ will be chosen from the ‘New Artist’ list.

The winners of these two categories will be announced during the broadcast of the show on December 30th at 6:30 PM (JST).

Check out the list below!

"New Artist Award"

• ICONIQ

• Kikuchi Madoka

• Shoujo Jidai (Girls' Generation)

• S/mileage

"Best New Artist"

• ICONIQ

• Kikuchi Madoka

• Shoujo Jidai (Girls' Generation)

• S/mileage

"Best Song"

• "I Wish For You" - EXILE

• "Aitai Riyuu" - AAA

• "Arigatou" - Ikimono Gakari

• "Tell Me Goodbye" - BIG BANG

• "Toilet no Kamisama" - Kana Uemura

• "Nijiiro no Bayon" - Kiyoshi Hikawa

• "New World" - w-inds.

• "Beginner" - AKB48

• "Matsushima Kikou" - Kaori Mizumori

• "Ready to be a lady" - GIRL NEXT DOOR

Note: The position of the artists are not ranked. In other words, the order does not matter as they have all won the same award.

Big Bang was chosen alongside 9 other artists for "Best Song Award" for their single, "Tell Me Goodbye". Girls' Generation was chosen as 1 of the 4 recipients for "Newcomer's Award".

The highest award for the music show is the "Japan Record Award" and it will be chosen from 1 of the 10 winners of the "Best Song Award". "Best Newcomer's Award" has also yet to be chosen and it will be chosen from 1 of the 4 "New Artist's Award" recipients. At last year's Japan Record Awards (51st), Big Bang won the "Best Newcomer's Award" and the year before that at the 50th Japan Record Awards, their sunbae DBSK was a recipient of "Best Song Award" for their single, "Why Did I Fall in Love with You?".

Just to clarify, both Big Bang and Girl's Generation have actually won their respective awards, not just nominated. There is just the possibility that they may each win an additional award if selected for the above mentioned awards that have yet to be decided.

Girls’ Generation to Appear in Court for Slave Contracts and Testify in DBSK Lawsuit

Girls’ Generation aka SNSD is set to appear in court to attest to the truth behind the slave contract accusations. They were scheduled to appear in November, but because SM Entertainment has requested time to organize papers, the court date has been pushed back to December.

These slave contracts first became a big issue when DBSK’s Junsu, Jaejoong, and Yoochun broke away from SM Entertainment because of their contract. Since then, many idols’ contracts have been looked into.

The interesting thing is that Girls’ Generation will not be arguing over their contract – they will be testifying against DBSK. SM Entertainment is being taken court by Cassiopeia, who required the court to look at DBSK’s contract because of unfair payment in proportion to the amount of work they do. SM Entertainment has yet to decide if all nine members will appear or if a part of the group will be representatives.

Because Girls’ Generation is currently one of the top idols, many think the court’s judging will affect how entertainment contracts are looked at. However, many also think that this is unfair, as whatever the Girls’ Generation members attest to during court will be controlled by SM Entertainment.

An official explained, “When many companies make contracts with possible celebrities, they make a contract for 7 years of trainee time and at least 3 years after debut, which means the contract will last for at least 10 years. However, it is judged that a contract time of over 10 years is a problem. Girls’ Generation’s testimony will either confirm or change this way of thinking.”

Ep. 25 part 2

Ueno Juri, who was in Japan to promote her new movie Nodame Cantabile The Movie II, appeared as an assistant chef at a conveyer belt sushi bar in thick black frame glasses. However, Seo Hyun and Yong Hwa didn't really notice Juri chan, because they were so engrossed in conversation. :) In the end Ueno Juri had to take off her glasses and actively called out to them. Finally when the two noticed her she said, "I thought you would notice me a bit earlier. That took a long time."

Jung Yong Hwa made it clear on a radio earlier that she was his ideal type and he exclaimed, "I can't believe Ueno Juri is standing right before my eyes." On the other hand, Seo Hyun was able to show her excellent Japanese conversation ability. She had a flawless conversation exchange with Ueno Juri, "I'm studying Japanese right now but, it's difficult because there's so much kanji."
